Yesterday, Law & Order Special Victims Unit (Law & Order SVU) ended with a note mentioning it was in memory of "Dennis Radesky".

Dennis Radesky was best known as a �Transportation Co-Captain� for many movies and TV shows and has reportedly passed away on 25th February 2009.

Dennis Radesky acted in Philadelphia as a Santa Claus in 1993. In 1986, Dennis was a transportation captain for Something Wild, in 1988 he was an assistant transportation captain for Married to the Mob. From 1991, he became a transportation co-captain for many movies and TV shows such as The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, The Mirror Has Two Faces, Men in Black, Sex and the City for the two episodes of 2001 and Vanilla Sky.

Radesky, was also teamster co-captain for the film Glengarry Glen Ross, in the year 1992.

The crowd that bundled up in freezing temperatures to see Punxsutawney's beloved groundhog Monday had something to celebrate -- but not good news about the weather.

''After casting a joyful eye towards thousands of his faithful followers, Phil proclaimed that his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers were world champions one more time,'' said the announcer at the annual event, as Punxsutawney Phil -- the most famous groundhog in the world -- gazed out at the cheering crowd.

''And as he looked, 'a bright sky above me showed my shadow beside me. So six more weeks of winter it will be.' Oh, woe is us. Woe is us!''

''Check again, Phil!'' yelled someone in the crowd, as temperatures were in the 20's.

Punxsutawney is about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

While the town hosts the best known Groundhog Day event, there are other similar celebrations featuring fellow groundhogs Gen. Beauregard Lee in Georgia, Buckeye Chuck in Ohio, and Staten Island Chuck in New York.

''Punxsutawney Phil is the only true weather forecasting groundhog. The others are just impostors,'' the official Punxsutawney Groundhog Club proclaims on its Web site, adding that for 120 years there has been only one Phil who gets his longevity from drinking a secret recipe for ''the elixir of life.''

The Feb. 2 Groundhog Day is a U.S. tradition that traces back to Europe's Candelmas Day. Germans who settled in Pennsylvania in the 1700s brought the custom with them.

Acoustic Guitars: Three Characteristics

Almost as important as the design of the guitar is the acoustics themselves, which is enabled and enhanced by the types of materials, design and relatively important manufacturing secrets and construction features.

For the most part, three main features are identified that contribute to these characteristics of the guitar. They are

Coupling
Material Composition
Plate Bracing

The term coupling is referring to when two vibrating objects, surfaces and patterns connect, intermingle and vibrate together, absorb and resonate. Energy displacement, from the source or impetus for the sound, namely plucking a string with your finger (or picked, strummed) the sting and bridge vibrate, stimulating the soundboard, traveling as airwaves and vibrations into the internal air cavity, of the guitar, travels around inside the sound-box, vibrating against the sides and back and keeps on going. If the components, individually and collectively work and connect, resonate and sound good, vibrate together, great music is to be made from and with it. When all the individual elements and sound wave patterns work well together, guitar is in tune, then the system is said to be coupled together and working well.

The guitar sound-box or body, actually acts as a channeling avenue for the sound, converting high pitch, high pressure vibrations at the bridge into low pressure vibrations in the surrounding air. It matches "impedance�. Higher sounds are created through stings and bridge, soundboard flow. Lower sounds are created through internal

The higher frequency (pitch) sounds are produced by string interaction with the bridge and then the sound board, whereas the lower frequencies are essentially driven by the internal air cavity/sound hole and ribs/back coupling effects:

How the vibrations flow, can also give some resonance frequency and how the strings are played can also have an effect or secondary influence on what the sounds will actually be.

Coupling between the different guitar parts will depend on a couple of factors, like which kinds of material are used, where they are places, math/geometry principles and the science of sound and frequency, resonance and playing techniques.

How these different parts come together is almost similar to how instruments play together in an orchestra, each having its part to play, forming a beautiful, resounding symphony of sound, song and music! If there is too much �coupling� sounds will be harsh-sounding and not pleasant on the ear, despite best-effort tuning.

Construction, materials and resonance symmetries, as well as bracing , even how the sides and top/back plates are connected, bridge type and placement, even glue or adhesive will all affect the final tone and sound-quality of the instrument. Sound-holes are resonators of the created sounds. Acoustics are also dependent on material Composition (more on that later).

With a tale that spans over four centuries, there certain is a lot of trivia, facts, myths, speculation, patents, accessories, models, types and iterations of the modern guitar around.

Yet, its place in the people�s hearts is still pretty much reserved and prime space, taken and not yet willing to let up. The classical guitar design and sound has stayed true to its origins and nature, with a range of modifications, refinements over the years. Both instrument, playing style, techniques (strumming, plucking, tabbing, capping etc.) are now quite common. Many instrument makers, producers, musicians, professional and amateur players, composers, song-writers, self-taught maestros enjoy the sounds and joy that this soundbox with strings can provide with such relative ease and minimal skill.

Famous names and players, composes and guitar pioneers include: Gaspar Sanz (1640-1710), Fernando Sor (1778-1839), Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829), Francisco T�rrega (1852-1909), Andr�s Segovia (1893-1987), The Romeros, Julian Bream (1933), and John Williams (1941).

Fingering methods, nails, fingertips or picks are used to pluck, strum or plectrum, box guitars to play polyphonic music.

When it comes to playing methods there are many different techniques to use. Fingerboards, chords, frets, neck, spacers, raised onto or with a footstool,. As you will see most often with classical players of the guitar. Resting on the leg and right arm is also quite common for positioning. Mobility, access and fingering can be extremely important for more complex moves and music on the classical guitar. It is not for the faint of heart. The right hand is often compared to the bow of a violinist, giving voice to the instrument. The guitar has a wide variety of different tones, volumes and sound nuances that you can created comfortably, with little mastery and practice to perfect your technique of preference. No two playing styles will be the same. Every player will tune and play the guitar in their own way. Strings are typically made up of gut, nylon or carbon fibre, with modern composite treble strings, even steel. These all give each guitar a unique sound, with a wide range of depth and variety in its music, sound and repertoire that can be achieved. There has been very little change in the size and design of the classical guitar for at least the past 100 years, although new instruments and variations on the guitar theme kept making debuts. The fallback was always the old-time favorite, made of cedar or spruce top, solid rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard for the purists amongst guitar-lovers and avid enthusiasts.

During the middle ages, you found guitars of different shapes, design, soundboxes, some with three, four, and five strings, even curved sides. Some claims to fame have the Spanish or Hawaiians, contributing to our modern people�s favorite instrument.

The Moors and European influences, on the shape of the oval soundbox with holes to optimize vibration and channeling of sound have to deserve some mention here as well.

There are also traced and evidence, documents and samples of four double-string guitars, similar to lutes, dating back to the 15th century, with a 16th century addition, namely a fifth, double-string added into the mix and harmony.

During the 1700�s Italy reigned supreme for guitar-making, with the Spanish adding a 6th string in the late 1800�s.

With global transportation and travel in the early 1900�s a reality now, word, music and popularity spread. Models with broadened body, increased waist curve, thinned belly, improved internal bracing, single string courses and machined head replaced wooden tuning pegs.

Whether inspired, altered, adjusted or modified, the guitar carries within it the voices and sounds of history and ancient times. Medieval, renaissance instruments, like the gittern, lute, wood-carved and lovingly hand-made, still inspires craftsman and artisanship in the making of guitars. The hand-made models typically being more expensive, even double in price than the mass-produced instruments.

Spain gave us the vihuela as a pioneer for our modern guitar, a four string guitarra, made its way into the heart of the people, more-so than the lute, later adding two more streings for depth, range and dynamic complexity.The oldest six string built back in 1759 in Italy, inspired the later-form mandolin.

Today concert, classical guitar, contemporary, ultra-sleek and modern-made guitars are readily available and quite affordable. Offering greater volume, more vibrations and longer sustain, even Multi-string classical guitars (6, 7 or 10 strings). So, regardless of the originator, first design, idea, application time or context, the guitar has come a long way and from the very first strumming, has earned a place in the heart of the people, humanity. Even to this day, there is nothing more soothing and unifying that a strumming guitar to feed the soul!

In many ancient artifacts, pots, murals and paintings, dating back to 2000-1500 BCE, unearthed in Iran, similarities are undeniable, between what these figures are playing as sketched and what we today know and love as the guitar. It has a long and proud history of approximately 5,000 years. The Asian cithara and numerous other musical objects from earlier times, all contributed to the sound-box, with neck, strings and tuning pegs type design that we have today. Carvings and artifacts only tell some of the tale of the guitar.

Mauritania forces stage coup after officers sacked

NOUAKCHOTT (Reuters) - Presidential guardsmen seized Mauritanian President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi in a coup on Wednesday after he sacked several top army officers, and announced that he had been deposed.

Soldiers gathered at the presidential palace after Abdallahi replaced senior army officers during a political crisis in the northwest African country, one of the continent's newest oil producers which also mines iron, copper and gold.

A "State Council" led by one of the sacked officers, former presidential guard chief Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz, said Abdallahi was now "former president" and annulled his previous decree sacking Abdelaziz and the heads of the army and Gendarmerie.

The communique, described as the council's "Statement No. 1," was broadcast by Gulf-based al-Arabiya television. State television and radio in Nouakchott had both ceased broadcasting earlier in the day.

Abdallahi won elections last year and took over from a military junta that had ruled since it toppled President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya in a bloodless coup in 2005.

"The security agents of the BASEP (Presidential Security Battalion) came to our home around 9.20 (5:20 a.m. EDT) and took away my father," Amal Mint Cheikh Abdallahi, the president's daughter, told Reuters.

A presidency official who declined to be named said the president, prime minister and interior minister had been arrested and taken to an unknown destination.

Largely desert Mauritania, a former French colony of more than 3 million people, straddles black and Arab Africa.

Abdallahi replaced one government in May following criticism over the government's response to soaring food prices and to attacks over the last year carried out by al Qaeda's north African arm.

But the new government resigned last month in the face of a proposed no-confidence vote.

A new one was formed but without the opposition Union of Forces for Progress (UFP) and Islamist Tawassoul parties which had formed part of the previous government.

This week most of the members of parliament belonging to Abdallahi's PNDD-ADIL party walked out from the party en masse, in a move some political sources said were supported by senior military officials.

Longtime Braves broadcaster Skip Caray dies at 68

ATLANTA (AP) � Skip Caray, a voice of the Atlanta Braves for 33 years and part of a family line of baseball broadcasters that included Hall of Famer Harry Caray, died in his sleep at home on Sunday, the team said. He was 68.

The cause of death was not immediately known, but various health problems had limited Caray to calling only Braves home games this season.

"We've all lost a very good friend," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "For me, he was a good buddy � at the park and away from the park. We always had a lot of great laughs. He will be very sorely missed."

Caray was drawn into broadcasting by his father, Harry, the longtime voice of the Chicago Cubs and a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

The family line has continued with two of Skip Caray's sons. Chip Caray is part of the Braves broadcast team and Josh Caray is working on the radio for the Class A Rome Braves.

While his father was known for his declarations of "Holy Cow," Skip Caray was able to declare "Braves Win! Braves Win!" with regularity as the team won 14 consecutive division titles beginning in 1991 and the 1995 World Series.

"Our baseball community has lost a legend today," Braves president John Schuerholz said. "The Braves family and Braves fans everywhere will sadly miss him. Our thoughts are with his wife Paula and his children."

Caray and Pete Van Wieren have been broadcasting Braves games since 1976. Caray's sarcastic wit made him a popular lead voice of the broadcast team, and his fame grew nationally as TBS carried Braves games to a national audience for 30 years.

After decades of calling the Braves America's Team, TBS this year began a seven-year contract of national weekly telecasts, leaving the Braves to the regional Peachtree TV network � and leaving Caray to radio work on home games.

Health problems also cut into Caray's workload.

Caray said this year he was battling diabetes, congestive heart failure, an irregular heartbeat and reduced kidney and liver functions.

"I almost died in October (2007)," Caray told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution at the Braves' 2008 home opener.

Still, Caray's death came as a shock, even to those who worked closely with him.

"He's had some medical issues but you're never ready for something like this," longtime TBS producer Glenn Diamond said Sunday night. "We're all very shocked by the timing. It's a very sad day for family and for Braves fans. I think the Braves fans feel they're part of Skip's family."

Caray, a St. Louis native, started in local radio and later joined his father at the University of Missouri calling football.

He joined the St. Louis Hawks NBA broadcasting team and followed them to Atlanta in 1968. He was added to the Braves broadcast team in 1976.

Caray and Van Wieren were inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame in 2005. Caray was named Georgia sportscaster of the year six times.

"He had a huge impact on a lot of people's lives and he had a huge impact on my life," Diamond said. "During the season we spent more time together than we did with our families and our lives."

Caray is survived by his wife and four children.

The Braves said funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Here's the first photo of the Montauk Monster.

Of course no scientists have come forward to say that the Montauk Monster exists. That hasn't stopped several more witnesses from stepping into the breach, and announcing that they too have seen the ugly critter.

Another alleged picture has surfaced

Ryan O'Shea of Brooklyn claims he saw the Montauk Monster, and lived to tell about it.

"Everybody I showed her pictures to said it looks like a dead dog," he said.

"But looking at the claws, and at the teeth in the front, it looked like it could be something else, something vicious."

"I kept thinking, 'Boy, I hope its mother isn't around."

Whatever this thing is, it's certainly one of a kind. Right now, the original "discoverers" of the carcass say it's in safe keeping and they're in touch with scientists to learn more about its' nature.
